چکیده

The ATP content of disks of storage tissue of red beet is reduced under N(2) atmosphere to between 10 and 25% of its value in air. Plasmalemma fluxes of K(+) and Cl(-) are inhibited within 1 minute or less following removal of O(2), and the extent of this inhibition is entirely attributable to the depletion of ATP. The ATP content remains approximately constant or decreases slightly for up to 1 hour under N(2). On return to air, the ATP content recovers, reaching 75% of the aerobic level within 45 second.

Slow ATP loss and the defense of ion homeostasis in the anoxic frog brain.

For most vertebrates, cutting off the oxygen supply to the brain results in a rapid (within minutes) loss of ATP, the failure of ATP-dependent ion-transport process, subsequent anoxic depolarization of neuronal membrane potential and consequential neuronal death. The few species that survive brain anoxia for days or months, such as the freshwater turtle Trachemys scripta, avoid anoxic depolariz...

Role of the Plasma Membrane H+-ATPase in K+ Transport.

The role of the plant plasma membrane H+-ATPase in K+ uptake was examined using red beet (Beta vulgaris L.) plasma membrane vesicles and a partially purified preparation of the red beet plasma membrane H+-ATPase reconstituted in proteoliposomes and planar bilayers. For plasma membrane vesicles, ATP-dependent K+ efflux was only partially inhibited by 100 [mu]M vanadate or 10 [mu]M carbonyl cyani...

Phosphorylation by Inorganic Phosphate of the Plasma Membrane H-ATPase from Red Beet (Beta vulgaris L.).

The phosphorylation of plasma membrane proteins from red beet (Beta vulgaris L.) by radioactive inorganic phosphate was studied. Only few proteins were phosphorylated, among them was one polypeptide with an apparent molecular weight of about 100,000. The phosphorylation of this protein was decreased when orthovanadate was present in the reaction mixture, or when the phosphorylated protein was t...

Adaptative response of Vitis root to anoxia.

The effect of anoxia on the energy economy of root cells was studied by measuring heat production, ethanol and ATP production, K(+) fluxes and electrical activity in two Vitis species, V. riparia and V. rupestris, that differ in their tolerance to anoxia. Anoxia triggered a marked decrease of metabolic activity (measured by microcalorimetry) and of ATP levels in both species. In V. riparia afte...

ATP Levels and their Effects on Plasmalemma Influxes of Potassium Chloride in Red Beet.

Tissue ATP concentrations in slices of red beet increase progressively with time for up to 7 days after cutting the root. ATP levels are higher in slices taken from stored roots than in slices from fresh roots. ATP is reduced during incubation in salt solutions.Plasmalemma influxes were measured by 6 minutes incubation with (42)K and/or (36)C1 under conditions in which cation and anion influxes...
